PAX AUS Indies 2016: Siegecraft Commander

Posted on November 19, 2016

So much was happening at PAX AUS 2016 that it was difficult to know where to look first. Luckily Blowfish Studios had a setup in the PAX Rising area that was just perfect for drawing in the PAX-goers attention with their latest game.

Siegecraft Commander is the newest addition to the well-loved Siegecraft series that is all about fortress building. I happened to be very lucky to talk to the developers and test out the game for myself.

Like the previous installments, the aim of Siegecraft Commander is to build branching fortress towers that serve as both offence and defence against the neighboring Inhabitants. You are on an epic journey of discovery and conquest in new lands, so of course you will make a few enemies along the way.

You start with a central keep that you can then branch out with other tower defences. You have the options of erecting ballistas, mortars and other helpful structures all connected by walls. There will be other towers and enemies that will aim their attacks at you when they see you invading and if their weapons hit any of your towers, they will collapse along with the walls that join them. Thinking strategically is a must; once they reach your central keep, you are overrun and defeated, so be cautious.

The game has a fresh and vibrant look, and is very inviting to those who have yet to play the series, like myself. Though I’ve never been very fond of fortress building games before, Siegecraft Commander has managed to change my mind on that, and I look forward to playing more.

One thing they have added to the game which adds a whole new level of playability is Virtual Reality. Yes, you did hear that right. There is an option for players to use their VR gear to immerse themselves in the gameplay, almost making it feel like you are a God hovering over tiny ants, bidding them to do your will. It’s a unique experience!

Overall, Siegecraft Commander is a great addition to the well loved series, and though they still have some adjustments to make to the game, I can imagine the final product is going to be an absolute joy to play.

Siegecraft Commander will be released on the 17th of January 2017 on Xbox One, PS4, PC (Steam, Win10) and Nvidia SHIELD. It will also be compatible with Steam VR and Oculus Rift.
