Be ringside on your couch with WWE coming to VR

Posted on January 11, 2018

With Virtual Reality definitely one of the most exciting pieces of technology currently on the market, it’s now been announced that WWE will be tag-teaming with NextVR to bring WWE experiences into your VR headsets in 2018.

In the announcement, the new partnership promises  “to bring fans unique WWE experiences in virtual reality, featuring highlights from select 2018 special events.”. While there is no specific time frame on when we can expect this to first be available (the Royal Rumble in a few weeks seems like a logical starting point), the content is planned to be released as free 10 minute experiences on a new WWE channel within the NextVR app following each event.

“WWE is amazing in VR, and we know fans are going to love it,” said David Cole, NextVR CEO. “Our patented VR broadcasting pipeline will bring fans ringside with WWE Superstars to experience the electrifying energy and spectacle firsthand.”

Every production will have WWE’s TV and production team position NextVR’s customer virtual reality cameras throughout each event to catch the most immersive views of the action. As a fan who has attended over 20 WWE events in my lifetime, I’m curious to see if this VR experience will be able to capture the feeling of being among the fans as the superstars I know and love hit their entrance music and wow the crowd. There is real potential here though. Imagine being front seat for the main event of Wrestlemania 34 from the comfort of your living room?

The free highlights service will be available for anyone who downloads the NextVR app for use on their Samsung GearVR headset or Google Daydream View, along with a compatible smartphone, PlayStation VR, or Windows Mixed Reality. Are you excited to get amongst the action of your favourite wrestlers?
