Marvel’s Spider-Man is officially Sony’s fastest-selling exclusive ever

Posted on September 21, 2018

USA Today has just revealed that PS4’s Spider-Man has sold a record-breaking 3.3 million units in 3 days. For those keeping track, that officially makes the latest web-slinging adventure the fastest selling first-party Sony exclusive, ever. The 3.3 million figure means that Insomniac Games’ most recent offering dethrones the previous holder of this title,  God of War, which earlier this year sold  3.1 million copies in 3 days.

The incredible figure includes both the 1 million pre-ordered copies, as well as the undisclosed amount of copies that sold as part of the Spider-Man PlayStation 4 Pro bundle.

Spider-Man doing well was always expected – Marvel’s movies have been a huge hit, and the hype-train behind the game has been building up for a while now. But it takes more than hype to achieve these figures –  the game also plays great, with fantastic action in a thriving open world.  Since release, the game has a very healthy 87 on Metacritic, and just recently it blitzed records in the UK to be the fastest selling game of the year (beating out cross-platform juggernaut Far Cry 5).  The writings were definitely on the wall. But even Sony couldn’t anticipate just how well Peter Parker’s latest adventure would have performed.

“Our expectations are always set at the highest levels,” said PlayStation’s global senior vice president of sales, Stephen Turvey.  “[Spider-Man] met and exceeded all expectations. I think the company and the campus and our fans are super proud of it.”

It’s been a hugely successful year for Sony – it’ll be interesting to see if any other of their upcoming exclusives will be able to match the crazy figures that Kratos and Peter Parker have achieved this year.
