Xbox, PlayStation and PC subscriptions offer a bunch of free games this November

Posted on November 8, 2018

Each month brings a fresh rotation of free games and goodies to enjoy. The November 2018 edition of favourable titles include games for PlayStation, Xbox and PC.

Firstly, Sony have announced the free game lineup for PlayStation Plus subscribers. The first is Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition, which updates the frenetic and fast-paced shooter for the modern console generation, and bundles with it all of the downloadable content. There is also Yakuza Kiwami (which recently received a sequel), the remake of the original Yakuza on the PS2, which brings chaotic brawling and a deep and varied setting. It is an excellent entry point into the quirky Japanese role playing franchise, or a perfect follow-up if you have played the prequel, Yakuza Zero.

For both PS4 and PS Vita, there is Roundabout and Burly Men at Sea. Roundabout is a very weird and quirky game where you drive a limo that is constantly spinning around on its central axis, and you must deliver passengers and generally wreck up the place, complete with cheesy FMV cutscenes. Burly Men at Sea is a charming and minimalist indie game where you follow three bearded, burly men on a seafaring voyage whilst you guide the story through decision-making. This is excellent for those who want a smaller game that can be completed in a single sitting.

Finally, PS3 players are getting Jackbox Party Pack 2 and Arkedo Series. The Jackbox series are excellent party games that utilise smartphone interactivity, making them great choices for social gatherings even if some of the players have never picked up a controller in their life. Jackbox Party Pack 2 includes the games Fibbage 2, Earwax, Bidiots, Quiplash XL, and Bomb Corp. Arkedo Series contains three “vintage-style” games: Jump!, Swap! and Pixel!.

Of course, Xbox Gold subscribers are also in for some great offerings this month. Xbox has announced that November’s Games with Gold will include Battlefield 1,  Race the Sun, the original Assassin’s Creed and Dante’s Inferno.

Battlefield 1 brings the Battlefield series back in time to the period of World War I, exploring multiple sides of one of the greatest conflicts in history. It was notable for covering some of the lesser-known fronts of the war and letting players take on the perspectives of several different factions throughout its single player campaign. Players are then able to bring the tactical first person shooter action to multiplayer, so if you’re playing on the Xbox One, players can perhaps look forward to a spike in players when Battlefield 1 becomes free for subscribers. Furthermore, there is Race the Sun, which is an indie minimalist runner game where players must try and outrun the setting sun without crashing. Be sure to survive long enough to beat high scores, as well as create your own levels and try out the custom levels of other players.

In addition, don’t forget Assassins Creed, the game that started the franchise that has led us to Assassins Creed Odyssey. It may feel a bit weird, looking back on how much the franchise has evolved since its beginnings 11 years ago, but it is a great way to see how the Assassin’s Creed games have developed since their humble beginnings with Altair’s fight against the Templars in the Crusades. There is also Dante’s Inferno, which is an enjoyable hack and slash loosely based on Dante’s Divine Comedy, as well as taking a not insignificant gameplay inspiration from the God of War franchise. If you can look past a slight lack of originality, there is fun to be had here.

On the PC side of things, subscribers to Humble Bundle can look forward to accessing  a sweet collection of  titles. One of the highlights includes Resident Evil: Revelations , the complete first season of Hitman and both Sniper Elite and its sequel, Sniper Elite V2. They will also get an exclusive sneak peek at the upcoming game Forager, which is a charming open world survival game focusing on survival, exploration and farming. This is on top of the usual access to the 60+ games in the Humble Trove that can be downloaded and played at any time.

And finally, if you are a Twitch Prime subscriber, you get free access to several cool titles. Firstly, there is AER Memories of Old, which is an atmospheric exploration puzzle game where you can turn into a bird and fly around a collection of floating islands, and then turn into a human to delve into dungeons and ancient ruins. There is also the chaotic couch co-op game Overcooked, where you and some friends  try and probably fail to coordinate as a team of chefs in a busy restaurant. Finally, Twitch Prime subscribers will be able to play the gorgeous narrative adventure game Pillars of the Earth, based on the best-selling novel by Ken Follett, as well as Overload, an intense zero-gravity shooter with 6 degrees of movement.
