Zelda producer teases a Skyward Sword Switch release

During a Legend of Zelda live concert in Osaka, Japan last weekend, series producer Eiji Aonuma appeared on stage to tease the possibility of the Wii’s Skyward Sword coming to the Nintendo Switch.

Zelda fans reported that Aonuma took to the stage during the event, asking ” I know what you are thinking – Skyward Sword for Switch, right?”  While the question was met with applause, Aonuma didn’t elaborate further.  There has been no official comment from either Aonuma or Nintendo since then, either.

While it could just be a light-hearted, throwaway comment, a remaster and HD version of Skyward Sword would make a lot of sense.  Firstly, the precedent for Zelda remakes has already been well established, with Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, Majora’s Mask, and Twilight Princess all getting the HD remaster treatment in the last few years. Skyward Sword is the next one up in terms of release order for a remaster.

According to Eurogamer, Nintendo is also keen to release a Zelda game on the Switch every year. 2017 was the glorious Breath of the Wild, and this year we had the Hyrule Warriors port. With a proper sequel to BotW looking unlikely in the new year, a Skyward Sword remaster seems like as good a bet as any. And as early as 2016, Aonuma was quoted as saying a remaster of Skyward Sword was ‘definitely possible‘.

Without any official word, we can only speculate for now. But based on the evidence on hand, it looks likely that we’ll be able to play Skyward Sword on the Switch fairly soon.  And as a very, very late fan to the series (I’m talking Breath of the Wild-late), I for one welcome this news!
