Pedro would like to apologise in advance for talking about Final Fantasy XIII-2 during a totally unrelated conversation. He really can't help himself.
Hogwarts Legacy, a new game set in the Harry Potter universe, was revealed at the PlayStation 5 Showcase this morning. It will be developed by Avalanche Software, best known for the Disney Infinity games. No gameplay was shown, but it will be set at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the “late 1800s”, and feature lots of magic, potions, fantastic beasts and mysterious masked figures.
A variety of Hogwarts students are shown to be fighting enemies and running through dungeons in the trailer, potentially meaning that you can create your own character. As well as running and fighting, attending classes also appears to be a big part of the game. Fingers crossed there is a risk of failing classes so you can live out your best Hermione life.
This looks to be the same game that had some footage leaked a couple years ago (known back then as Harry Potter Magic Awakened). If this is the case, that means Avalanche has been working on this title for at least two years. As impressive as the trailer is for a reveal, and as epic as that new rendition of Hedwig’s Theme is, its timing is very unfortunate.
It’s a tough time to be a Harry Potter fan these days. The author of the books continues to engage in transphobic and anti-LGBT rhetoric, particularly in the last few months, leading many fans (queer fans particularly) to rethink their love of the franchise. It is currently unknown how much input she had in the development of Hogwarts Legacy, but either way, the public response towards her could affect sales of the game.
The trailer ends with the quote “The choices you make now will define the legacy of Hogwarts.” Maybe JK Rowling should pay attention to that statement.
Hogwarts Legacy will be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC in 2021.
