Hogwarts Legacy delayed to 2022

Posted on January 14, 2021

Hogwarts Legacy, the upcoming RPG set in the Wizarding World of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter franchise, has had its release date pushed back a year. Developer Avalanche Software announced the delay on Twitter, advising that they want to give Hogwarts Legacy “the time it needs.”

“We would like to thank fans from around the world on the tremendous reaction to the announcement of Hogwarts Legacy from our Portkey Games label,” the developer stated. “Creating the best possible experience for all of the Wizarding World and gaming fans is paramount to us so we are giving the game the time it needs. Hogwarts Legacy will be released in 2022.”

Hogwarts Legacy will be a prequel set in the magical school of Hogwarts in the late 1800s. Although gameplay details are still somewhat scarce, you will play as a Hogwarts student, participating in classes and duels and exploring the history of the Wizarding World. Publisher WB Games has taken efforts to distance the game from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling after she made several transphobic remarks on Twitter, stating that “J.K. Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game”

Of course, the last year or so is no stranger to delays. With much of the world still in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic and developers working from home, many projects have had their development extended. Particularly as they are  working with a brand as valuable as Harry Potter, Avalanche Software will want to ensure that the game is as polished as it can be on release. Hogwarts Legacy will release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC in 2022.
