Blizzard’s giving Overwatch’s Symmetra a redesign

Posted on November 24, 2016

Typically in Overwatch, Hero’s only have one ultimate ability, so the fact that Symmetra is about to get given a second one is pretty big news. Blizzard game director Jeff Kaplan revealed on Tuesday that she would be the first (hint of more to come?) character to receive the choice of ultimate’s upon full charge.

Now featuring a shiny new Shield Generator that can be placed to protect the entire team to go along with her Teleporter, players will be notified just before her ultimate is fully charged to pick which they would prefer to use. Along with the brand new ultimate ability, she also received a new move: Photon Barrier, which Kaplan compared to Reinhart and Winston’s projected shields. Symmetra’s Photon Barrier is an elliptical projectile and moves along a trajectory which can be used both offensively and defensively.

This will bring a whole new team element to Symmetra and see her stepping out from being the disco diva of base protection that she was isolated to previously. With no timeline set yet for full console or PC introduction, if you’re keen to give her new skills a whirl before anyone else, Symmetra 2.0 is now live and playable in the Overwatch Public Test Region.
