Posted on September 2, 2024

September 2024. You know how this works by now. Let’s not waste another minute. Here are 10 marvellous indies out this month!

Demon’s Mirror

Developer: Be-Rad Entertainment

Release Date: September 5

Platforms: PC

“Step into the Demon’s Mirror and enter a fantastical, nightmarish world in this roguelike deckbuilder! Strategy meets the arcane in a unique fusion of deck-building and chain-3 mechanics. Can you face your demons and come out unscathed?”

Good news iPad babies who need several stimuli at once! Demon’s Mirror fuses two of the best and most simple game mechanics of all time to satisfy the rotten parts of your brain that enjoy seeing numbers go up. Simply put, it’s two of my favourite gameplay mechanics in one. I need to get my disgusting little grubby hands on this one.

Satisfactory

Developer: Coffee Stain Studios

Release Date: September 10

Platforms: PC

“Satisfactory is a first-person open-world factory-building game with a dash of exploration and combat. Play alone or with friends, explore an alien planet, create multi-story factories, and enter conveyor belt heaven!”

After four long years, the factory and automation simulator game is finally coming out, and, selfishly, I can’t wait. I’m a huge nut for setting up industry pipelines in my games and getting my hands dirty in all the setup that involves. Better yet, in the trailer displayed above, they’re adding a lactose-intolerant update—the tummy-hurt patch. Finally, I have some true representation. I can’t wait.

Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines

Developer: Medallion Games

Release Date: September 12

Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S

“Swing, jump, and blast through dimensions in the follow-up to the critically-acclaimed 2D action-platformer Grapple Dog. Zip between action-packed worlds as Pablo and Luna team up to save the cosmos in their own unique ways.”

I never got through much of the original, but it’s a cool and creative platformer I’ve always wanted to return to. I always enjoy seeing an indie game sequel; it’s an indicator of an IP or studio thriving and having fun. I love this for Medallion Games! I promise I’ll get through your wonderful games one day!

Caravan SandWitch

Developer: Studio Plane Toast

Release Date:  September 12

Platforms: PC

“Embark on a journey across vast landscapes in Caravan SandWitch, a captivating narrative-driven exploration adventure.”

Caravan SandWitch looks like such a lush adventure game. Taking a caravan and exploring the open roads, with no death states, timers or combat… Just you and your van. This looks like an absolute vibe.

Hollowbody

Developer: Headware Games

Release Date: September 12

Platforms: PC

“A tech-noir survival horror short story, set in the urban decay of a long abandoned British city. Solve environmental puzzles, manage limited resources and fight for a way to escape beyond the wall.”

Remember when there was a while in gaming when Silent Hill games either weren’t releasing or weren’t very good? Hollowbody is an answer to that drive and want for the good old days. The indie survival horror space is only getting better and better in recent years. It’s coming at a time when it looks like it damn near could be standing toe to toe with the Silent Hill 2 remake and give it a run for its money. Set in an abandoned city in Britain too! I can’t think of a more horrifying setting: England! Kudos!

Wild Bastards

Developer: Blue Manchu

Release Date: September 12

Platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X

“The spiritual successor to the award-winning game Void Bastards, Wild Bastards is a roguelike strategy shooter with heart-pounding FPS action, mod management, and a tactical campaign. Saddle up and lead the most notorious outlaws in the galaxy.”

I didn’t think it was possible to make a shooter as luscious, gorgeous and vibrant as 2019’s Void Bastards. Little did I know all it would take would be a wondrous follow-up with a western spin where the adventure is adrenaline-filled, explosive and a world I desperately want to explore. Wild Bastards is just Vibes: The Videogame. I can’t wait for it.

Fowl Damage

Developer: May Gardens, Red Nexus Games Inc.

Release Date: September 13

Platforms: PC

“Fowl Damage is an atmospheric puzzle platformer where your default jump provides enough fall damage to destroy you! Carefully manage your jumps and falls as you adventure through this chilling, beautiful, and occasionally cute world.”

Fowl Damage is a clever spin on the genre where every fall is just as calculated as every jump. Mitigating the distance you fall to keep yourself is a simple but compelling idea. It also looks like a curious story is being teased through environments. Just why is this egg rolling through a mysterious scientific research centre? Who knows! What we do know is you can’t make an omelette without cracking a few eggs.

UFO 50

Developer: Mossmouth, Jon Perry, Moppin, Paul Hubans, Tyriq Plummer, Eirik Suhrke

Release Date: September 18

Platforms: PC

“UFO 50 is a collection of 50 single and multiplayer games that span a variety of genres, from platformers and shoot ’em ups to puzzle games, roguelites, and RPGs. Our goal is to combine a familiar 8-bit aesthetic with new ideas and modern game design.”

Seven(!) years after its reveal, the game within a game within a game (x50) is finally almost here. Getting to explore a fictional console and fifty of its games is such a compelling and creative concept and one I can’t wait to explore. Serving as a nod and remembrance of lost media, UFO 50 looks to be immortalised as a hell of a project, all depicted in gorgeous 8-bit art. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to play a game by the Spelunky devs that I don’t entirely suck at.

Tiny Glade

Developer: Pounce Light

Release Date: September 23

Platforms: PC

“Tiny Glade is a small relaxing game about doodling castles. Explore gridless building chemistry, and watch the game carefully assemble every brick, pebble and plank. There’s no management, combat, or wrong answers – just kick back and turn forgotten meadows into lovable dioramas.”

Talk about a personally hotly anticipated game from yours truly here. Tiny Glade has always captivated me from every one of its showings over the years. Channeling games like Townscaper, Tiny Glade is all about drawing and building up cities, only this time they’re medieval structures. Alleys with taverns, castle walls, every brick and pebble falling to place… It looks so gorgeous and vibrant. Foliage looks soft as cotton candy, yellowing sunlight hits the scapes just right… This is a video game right here.

The Holy Gosh Darn

Developer: Perfectly Paranormal

Release Date: September 26

Platforms: PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5

“The Holy Gosh Darn is a narrative adventure with a time-travelling twist. Time travel to jump between the past and present across Heaven, Hell, Earth and Helheim. Uncover information in one timeline to alter things in another in a bid to stop your heaven from going bang. Again.”

This sounds like a cool continuation from the studio that has brought you other delightful indies like Manual Samuel. An interdimensional travelling adventure game is enough to pique my interest as is (at least according to the Steam description) the promise of “Exactly 4,250 dogs.” Oh. What’s that? We can’t pet any of them? Monkey’s paw situation on our hands, here guys. Fix this!

And there you have it. 10 marvelous indies landing in September 2024. If somehow you’re still after more games, why not check out the indies of last month?
