Returning to PAX Aus 2024 is Hungry Sky, a Perth-based game development company known for Nekograms. Now, they’re back with the demo for their next title – Snow Cone. This game features penguins as its mascot animal and the goal is to make snow cones by navigating through a snowy obstacle course.
You play as Pedro, a penguin in training under Sarge to make snow cones. Your job is to push snow around to ensure you create the right dish. The challenge comes when your snow cones require a certain sizing order, as well as when facing obstacles like walking on slippery ice or falling into the water.
This game is really cute and it challenges the player to navigate the levels to create the right item. And unlike Nekograms, it does not punish you if you make too many moves. And before anyone asks, no Pesto the Penguin is not in the game. In fact, Hungry Sky only heard about Pesto a week before PAX and was surprised at how close the character names were. They said that they’re thinking of adding Pesto in the form of a little Easter egg.
Jack Casey, the technical director of Hungry Sky, told Checkpoint that a prototype of the game was made before he joined the company. It was after the release of Nekograms that he pitched his idea, which got approved and received funding from Screenwest. The game entered production in February and while there has yet to be a solid release date, they’re currently eyeing the second half of 2025.
“I made a prototype of Snow Cone 3 years ago now, I think. I found it quite fun but since then, it’s been put on the shelf…
…I came on board at Hungry Sky to help with all the technical aspects of taking Nekograms onto Apple Arcade and onto Nintendo Switch. And then pitched this [as] something we can work on, and then we pitched it to Screenwest and we got a bit of funding to help us resource the game. And yeah, it’s now our second game we’re bringing out.”
Snow Cone continues Hungry Sky’s legacy of creating cute puzzle games with animal mascots. Just like its predecessor, it will challenge the player to create the right product using snow off the ground. Pedro is a hardworking penguin who wants to make his snow cone-making dreams a reality, and with the help of the player, that can be achieved.
