We reveal the new MTG Aetherdrift card, Trade the Helm!

Posted on January 28, 2025

Taking the world of Magic: The Gathering and giving it a professional racing spin, Aetherdrift is easily one of the more unique expansions that we’ve seen from the iconic card game.

Launching on the day of love, February 14 (with prerelease kicking off a week earlier on February 7), you’ll get behind the wheel as you tear through three different planes in a high-octane death race. Factions across the multiverse are kitting out their rides for a chance to win the coveted Aetherspark, the ultimate trophy.

With thanks to Wizards Of The Coast, we’re pleased to bring you an exclusive card preview: Trade the Helm.

Trade the Helm

Artist name: Lius Lasahido

Mana cost: 4U

Type: Sorcery

Rarity: Uncommon

Activated abilities: Exchange control of your target artifact or creature you control and target artifact or creature an opponent controls.

Cycling 2 (2, Discard this card: Draw a card.)

Trade the Helm is the latest version in a long list of Legerdemain-like cards that allow you to swap cards with an opponent. While relatively expensive at 5 mana these effects are extremely powerful, often allowing you to swing games in your favour if you can play them at the right time.

Trade the Helm means you can effectively trade control of something on your side of the Battlefield for something on your opponent’s side. You could, in theory, give up control of a small fodder creature, but then take control of a super-strong creature from the opposition. It not only has the potential to remove a powerful card but also then lets you use it against them. Pretty cool stuff.

As a bonus, you can spend 2 mana to discard the card and draw a new one, so that it doesn’t just take up important space in your hand if the opportunity to capitalise on it doesn’t arise.
