With the recent rise in popularity for horror games, (thanks to popular Youtube Let’s Players and releases like Until Dawn, The Evil Within and the many cult favorite indie games out there.) we are starting to see a lot more big scale horrors come to the table, and one such game in the works is Agony.
Newcomers Madmind Studio are in the early stages of developing this, what looks to be hellish game. With a team currently comprised of 9 industry veterans who have worked on titles such as The Witcher 3, The Division, Alien Rage and more, you know there is the potential for greatness in this game. with such a newly founded development studio we can hopefully look forward to seeing some horrifyingly fresh content for the survival horror genre.
Unlike many of the genres releases in recent years, Agony appears to be a bit of a breath of fresh air in terms of themes. It may not sound likely, but horror games literally set in a hell landscape are fairly rare these days. Of course, we see many that are considered hellish and grotesque, like old favorites the Silent Hill franchise and Siren, but none really specifically set IN hell, which is where the story of Agony begins. You play as a tormented soul, doomed to eternity in hell with no memories of your past life. Exploring the red hellscapes will see you coming across many demons and other tormented souls trapped in this ghoulish place with you. Interacting with these other weary souls will help you to come to understand that the only possible way of escaping this nightmare is by meeting with the mystical Red Goddess.
The game is also said to bring in a feature that allows you control other people along your path, and even posses simple minded demons. Using this ability of possession will be detrimental to your survival in such an insanely hostile environment. Now, I don’t know about you, but with this information and the intro sneak peak trailers we have of the game, I am REALLY looking forward to this. We still have a while to go until we will be able to see the release of the game, which is set to come out some time in 2017 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
Hopefully this will prompt developers into producing some more AAA title horror games for us. With the large source of recent indie horrors we already have, (and the smaller handful of AAA ones) it’s about time we see more of the larger contenders giving us something NEW to be terrified about!
Are you excited for some hell gore? Take a look down below for this Agonizing trailer! (ohhh the puns.)
There will be blood. there will be pain. there will be Agony.
