Microsoft book-ended their E3 press conference with their take on the present and future of console gaming: Xbox One S and Project Scorpio.
But what does the future actually look like? Phil Spencer, who heads up Microsoft’s Xbox division, believes that it’s all about “true 4K gaming and high fidelity VR.” What remains to be seen is whether this will actually deliver the “step change” for gamers and developers that Phil is looking for.
Technical details about Project Scorpio are very sparse at this stage, and bizarrely focused around the six teraflops of computing power that Project Scorpio’s graphics card will have access to.
Not only is this not a worthwhile measurement of system performance without knowing the capability of the other components in the system, but it also reeks of a company that is trying to bamboozle consumers into believing what they’re doing is great. Also the name Project Scorpio just reminds me of that crackpot out of The Simpsons.
But it may be great yet! Watch this space.
