The Olympic Games comes to Overwatch

Posted on August 3, 2016

The Rio Olympics have kicked off early in digital form with an Overwatch seasonal event! The event has already begun and will commence for the next three weeks allowing players to earn seasonal Loot Boxes, acquire  100+ new cosmetic items and score some goals in the latest game mode: Lúcioball.

For the duration of the Overwatch Olympics event, any Loot Box purchased or earned has changed to accommodate the sporting event. “Inside, players will have a chance to find a variety of new cosmetic items commemorating the Summer Games—including themed sprays, emotes, victory poses, highlight intros, player icons, and some very special skins. ” – [source]

Each Loot Box is guaranteed to contain one or more of the new seasonal items which can not be purchased separately. Once the event concludes though, players will no longer be able to earn or purchase any of the events items outside of the ones they managed to unlock.

Also included in the Olympic update is a new game mode: Lúcioball. Perhaps borrowing some of the popularity of Rocket League, the game mode will allow players to compete in a fast-paced, 3v3, soccer match using Lúcio’s abilities to dribble, pass and score goals!

The summer games are now live on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
