Aye yai yai! Saban’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January 2017.
With the release of the live action Power Rangers movie in March 2017, it is no surprise that a video game will coincide; although interestingly it is not the typical “movie title: the game” format. Maybe this is because there was already a “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie” video game released for the SNES back in 1995.
In MMPG: MB you are able to relive all of the classic Power Ranger battles from the first two seasons of the TV show, in a side-scrolling multiplayer beat ’em up-fighting game from Bandai Namco. This game promises to feature all of your favourite bosses including Lord Zedd and my favourite of all Power Ranger villains, Rita Repulsa (who actually may be one of my favourite villains ever, just sayin’).
MMPG: MB has the promise of a fun battling adventure down memory lane, albeit with slightly bigger heads than I remember. This being said the crisp and clean animation and artwork does have a nice cartoon feel to it, which creates a style distinct from the classic live action series, while the sound grabs from the original show adds to the nostalgia factor. I am certain fans of the original series will have fun with this game, and how well the multiplayer gameplay works will ultimately decide the success of this title. The real challenge looks like finding friends who can agree on which colour ranger to be. No there can’t be five Pink Rangers.
