Dontnod Entertainment’s follow up game to the wildly successful Life Is Strange is called Vampyr, and they have unveiled a new cinematic trailer filled with mystery, intrigue, and a macabre ambiance that only a disease-riddled 1918 London can provide.
The trailer revolves around Dr Jonathan Reid, telling his tale through the hushed whispers of the weary London citizens. Having come home, after serving in the Great War as a surgeon, Dr Reid has offered to provide his services to a town stricken by the ravages of Spanish Flu – but that is not the town’s only cause for concern. Vampires roam London’s alleys at night, feeding on the innocent, and leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. Having recently been made a Vampire himself, Dr Reid is forced to grapple between his Hippocratic Oath to help those in need, and his desire to satiate his gnawing hunger for fresh human blood.
It’s made apparent throughout the trailer that relationships between Dr Reid and the residents of London will play an important role in the game. It has been commented on that every person you encounter has their own unique story to tell, and that this is done to establish a level of empathy that makes killing harder. Players will be faced with the challenge of either taking lives to level up, or sparing lives to maintain their cover. Ultimately everyone, including Jonathan Reid will learn that help is never truly free; it always comes at a cost.
Vampyr is set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017, with no official release date yet announced.
