Veteran story-tellers AQUAPLUS will be bringing their visual novel strategy RPGs to the west in 2017, with the releases of Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth.
Mask of Deception will be releasing first, featuring a story that boasts 40-50+ hours of visual novel content, along with strategy RPG combat that will include an active battle system against a range of monsters. When you awake with no memory (classic JRPG trope, right?), you’ll quickly befriend a girl named Kuon, who takes you under her care and begins a journey across the land, building deep relationships, battling foes and learning about the political machinations of the nation of Yamato.
With a deep combat system and anime-style art, it will release in coming months before the sequel, Mask of Truth, finds a release later in the year.
Both games will include their original Japanese audio for traditionalists; while it’s not a franchise we know much about, we’re certainly keen to try it after learning more about it today! Check out the trailer for Mask of Deception below!
