The Secret World relaunching as “Secret World Legends”

Posted on March 31, 2017

The Secret World launched as an MMORPG back in 2012, featuring a unique horror setting and creative quest structure. It wasn’t as commercially successful as it probably should have been, but Funcom is  now relaunching it into a free-to-play online action RPG called Secret World Legends.

Content-wise, the game will essentially be the same as the original, but the gameplay itself has been revamped completely. Secret World Legends  is said to feature “combat that feels more natural, deep systems that are more intuitive, better structuring of the early game for new players, and improved mission flow to strengthen the pace of progression for players.”

“Over the course of five years, The Secret World has created a truly memorable RPG universe that stands out to this day for the uniqueness of its dark setting and tone, the depth of its quest design, and the high quality of its voice acting throughout,” said Rui Casais, CEO of Funcom. “Secret World Legends uses that foundation to mark a new era for the game, offering a fresh start for newcomers and long-time fans alike, delivering a captivating journey that can be enjoyed entirely on your own or with friends.”

Players of The Secret World need not worry, as they will still be able to play in its current form; unlike most relaunches, Funcom won’t be shutting down the original.

One of the things I loved about The Secret World was the inventive quest structure. One mission in particular had you finding a corpse with a badge on it, including their name and their company. To figure out their computer password and complete the mission, you had to use an actual internet browser to go to the company website (that had been created specifically for this purpose), search for that employee and identify their potential password based on the clues and their company bio. There were many quests like this that destroyed expectations and made for a very cool gameplay experience.
