It has been announced that a new Need for Speed game is coming our way. Need for Speed Payback will be released on Nov 11 and the trailer looks insane. Developer Ghost Games describe it as an explosive adventure filled with intense heist missions, high stakes car battles, epic cop pursuits and jaw dropping set pieces.
Featuring three playable characters, this adventure is set in the underworld of fictional Fortune Valley. Tyler, the Racer; Mac, the Showman; and Jess, the Wheelman are united in a quest for vengeance against a criminal cartel named The House. A syndicate that rule the cities casinos, criminals, police and no doubt the streets.
The Need for Speed Payback trailer looks pretty sweet if I do say so myself and appears to have a Fast and the Furious flavour too it. Pulled off correctly it could turn out to be an enjoyable action packed game, if not it may be more Driver than Grand Theft Auto.
The Need for Speed series saw its first release in 1993 for the doomed 3DO and its latest in 2015. Beginning as more of a simulator type racing game a la Test Drive, over time it moved more into arcade action style driving. Although certainly a pillar of the genre, in its early life one could argue over time it has been relegated to the sideline by competitor series such as Gran Turismo and Forza to name just two.
The trailer looks great and the concept seems sound.
Will this entry restore Need For Speed to the forefront of the racing genre?
