From Darksiders publisher THQ Nordic and Piranha Bytes, the studio that brought us gems such as Gothic and Risen, comes new open-world sandbox RPG Elex. The game’s core mechanics and visual style has been shown off via a gameplay trailer, embedded below, and I have to say this has me itching for more.
Set on a meteor-ravaged world named Magalan, you are a member of the ‘Alb’ tribe who are said to consume the eponymous life force (elex) to strengthen their bodies and rid themselves of emotions. The trailer depicts a merging of science fiction action and the epic wonder of fantasy; think Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Dead Space in a blender.
There are five different zones to explore, filled with monsters, treasures, and impressive landscapes to respectively kill, discover, and explore. As a sandbox style game, Elex’s map is open from the get-go, with the all-too-familiar-but-almost-never-delivered mantra of “if you can see it, you can go there” applied liberally. The game has four factions available to the player to join, and a hefty arsenal of weaponry available from ancient melee weapons and crossbows to futuristic laser rifles.
THQ Nordic are also releasing a collector’s edition, which includes an art book, soundtrack, a cloth map of Magalan, a combat drone amulet, and a 10-inch figure.
According to the game’s official twitter account, Elex is set to appear at the upcoming E3 conference, so more information and footage will hopefully surface there. Elex will be available for purchase on October 17 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
