Magic: The Gathering brings Devastation with the return of Nicol Bolas

It is now the Hour of Devastation  nothing to do with bad curry, and all to do with the latest ancient Egyptian-inspired Amonkhet card series within Magic: The Gathering.

In the Hour of Devastation, the Gates to the Afterlife in Nicol Bolas’ created plane finally open to accept warriors who proved themselves worthy in the Trials.  However, no paradise lays waiting, instead only wastelands and forgotten Amonkhet deities.  Four hours of observation shall take place before the God-Pharaoh (Nicol Bolas) returns in the final, and rather devastating hour.

New mechanics in this series include Eternalize, allowing fallen creatures to return as stronger 4/4 zombie versions of themselves, and Afflict, which causes opponent players to lose life if they block an attack.

Things do not seem to be looking good for the GateWatch, with each Planeswalker having its own ‘defeat’ instant card to depict their struggle against Nicol Bolas with a sassy quote from the God-Pharaoh included to add a pinch of salt to their wounds.

The most exciting part of this expansion is both the inclusion of new Legendary God creatures, and of course the return of Nicol Bolas as a playable God-Pharaoh Planeswalker.  Also, some heavy hitting Desert land cards and artefacts have been included to balance game play, such as the Crook of Condemnation and Scavenger Grounds which possess the ability to exile all cards from all graveyards.

Devastation is certainly the theme in the second expansion of Magic: The Gathering Amonkhet, now available at all good places to buy things.
