Wrestling fans are always wondering what features are going to be the highlights of their yearly WWE game, and with Seth Freakin’ Rollins recently revealed to be the cover star of WWE 2K18, 2K Games have given us a little bit of information on what to expect on their official blog.
Firstly, they are adding to the Creation Suite, this year bringing back the Create-a-Match feature. Being able to tweak the rules of matches is great for fantasy bookers everywhere and should add to some fun in the multiplayer modes. The MyCAREER experience has also been tweaked, “which incorporates a new story and a free-roaming backstage area that enable MyPLAYER characters to interact with other WWE Superstars and help direct the narrative”. Given the career mode has been one of the weaker aspects of the franchise in past years, hopefully this is a step in the right direction. Current Raw GM Kurt Angle has also been recently announced as a pre-order bonus.
The new Road to Glory mode is perhaps the most interesting; there’s not much detail about it yet, but we’ve been told that “players will compete against others, using their MyPLAYER characters, in a quest to qualify for WWE pay-per-view events” So it sounds like some sort of online season mode?
In Royal Rumble matches there will be additional elimination mechanics to keep it from getting stale, with up to 8 wrestlers now able to compete in the ring at once. Same goes for ladder matches, 8-man tags and Battle Royals, so that’s rad. There will also be a rebuilt graphics engine, and in stellar news, A NEW COMMENTARY TEAM!!
The commentary from previous years has felt stale and horrible for so long, and with the new team of Michael Cole, Byron Saxton and Corey Graves, WWE 2K18 is going to sound incredibly fresh by comparison. Graves in particular is, for my money, the best commentator in the company right now, so I’m thrilled that he’ll be bringing his wit to the game.
With more information expected in coming weeks, it looks like we’ll have a lot to look forward to when WWE 2K18 releases for PS4 and Xbox One on October 17th.
