Runescape is going mobile, putting this classic MMORPG in the palm of your hands

Posted on July 19, 2017

At one point or another in our lives we’ve all probably played Runescape. For a lot of us it was likely the first MMORPG we ever dared to dip our toes into before moving onto more grand and expansive worlds. But for a select few it was a place of endless wonder and joy they never wanted to leave. Well we have the news of a lifetime for those still adventuring in the online world of Runescape because developer Jagex has announced that both the modern and old-school versions of its classic MMORPG will be available to download on mobile phone and tablet.

The game’s interface has been optimised for mobile play but its core remains the same. Players will be able to log in with their existing accounts, continuing the adventures of the characters they’ve come to love and spent so much time levelling. And most importantly, players can hotswap back and forth between the desktop client and their mobile or tablet whenever they want. According to Jagex, one of the many bonuses to this hotswapping will be the ability for seamless cross-platform gaming, allowing gamers on mobile and desktop to traverse the Runescape world together.

RuneScape on Mobile

The current plan is for Old-School Mobile to release first by Winter (that’s Summer this year for us Australians) with Runescape Mobile to follow sometime in 2018. If all of that sounds a bit confusing and you haven’t been highly addicted to Runescape since its public launch in 2001, Runescape is now two entirely different games. RuneScape is the current iteration of the game that Jagex has been working on since 2001, whilst Old-School RuneScape is based on the 2007 version of the game and despite its name was actually released in 2013 with updates for the game being voted on by the player community.

Despite being 16 years old this game and its dedicated community just keep going and now with its move to handheld mobile gaming one can only assume it will continue to grow to a whole new group of gamers.
