In an industry currently in love with hardcore action-RPG games, heralded by the Souls series, Deck13 took up the mantle to bring the genre out of the fantasy realm and into the world of Sci-Fi — bringing us The Surge. The game is set in a dystopian future where our reliance on technology and a ravaged Earth have left us all in the deep end. You wake up as Warren and must use your exoskeleton to take on rouge AI controlled robots and other deranged exoskeleton suited workers.
The game was favourably received by reviewers when it launched in May, even our own Luke enjoyed it, but the game wasn’t advertised as heavily as the studio’s first endeavour in the genre “Lords of the Fallen” and may have had a shaky launch due to this. I know I found out about it via a “10 games in 2017 you don’t know about” list — that’s not great for their marketing team.

But the team behind The Surge have decided to help bring new fans into the series. As of right now you can download a demo for the game on PS4, Xbox One and PC. According to Deck13 the game will include the opening hours of The Surge so you can get a feel for the combat, story and world.
With Dark Souls coming to a close with its last DLC and no Bloodborne on the horizon, now is the perfect chance to see if this new entry in the Soulsborne dominated genre has enough to challenge you. If you’re still on the fence, check out Luke’s review before you don a power suit and punch some robots.
