Devil May Cry HD collection, a sign of things to come?

Posted on December 10, 2017

Devil May Cry HD Collection has been announced for PS4, Xbox One and PC for early 2018. It features the first three games in the series. You would be forgiven for thinking this collection had already been released and you’ve seen it on store shelves. That is because it was!

The last generation of consoles played host to this collection back in 2012. From the screenshots, the games appear to look similar to their previous HD outing. That said, DMC : Devil May Cry (the reboot) got a PS4/Xbox One release as did an updated Devil May Cry 4. So if you are a fan, this will complete your collection.

Devil May Cry as a series has an interesting history, originally it started development as Resident Evil 4. Until it was decided that the gameplay and feel of the main character didn’t fit with the main series. It was retitled, a new story written and became the series we know it as today.

Another interesting point is that at the time, Nintendo had managed to nab the Resident Evil series as a Gamecube exclusive for three games. Resident Evil : Code Veronica was a Sega Dreamcast exclusive title initially. The result? Sony was left without a Resident Evil entry for their brand new PS2. As such, in its place Sony received the Devil May Cry series as a replacement.

Despite the mix of unusual circumstances surrounding its creation, the Devil May Cry series has consistently set the standard when it comes to 3D hack and slash games, arguably the genesis of the genre. However despite its success and critical acclaim it has sat largely dormant over the past few years. Devil May Cry 4 is now 9 years old and the reboot debuted 5 years ago.

However, could the release of the new collection be a hint that a new entry is on the way? Hideki Kamiya, who worked on the Resident Evil series, Devil May Cry and went on to Bayonetta has previously said that he would be open to doing a new Devil May Cry game with Capcom. Couple that with the news that Bayonetta 3 is going to be Switch exclusive and all of a sudden the situation starts to feel 2001 all over again. One console is not getting this collection.. maybe the time is right for Devil May Cry to return.
