Yume Nikki -Dream Diary- trailers released

Is the old cult classic Yume Nikki getting a sequel? It’s been 14 years since the first, but on a Steam announcement on the first Yume Nikki game it seems to point to a sequel coming out. The announcement titled  “The countdown to the next YUME NIKKI project begins” ,  has stirred up a lot of noise already, with theories already starting to be thrown around about what this could mean.

There’s little to go on right now. The announcement, the recent Steam page for the original game, 2 trailers and nothing else. It’s unclear if this is by the original creator Kikiyama or not at this point as well. But we don’t have long to speculate.

The announcement has nothing more than a title and a link to the countdown site. It doesn’t have long to go though, with the current timer as of this article being:

She even makes a short appearance in the video if you’re watching closely:

Not weird enough for you? There’s an 8 minute one with a lot of screams, undulating blood pools, trippy light shows, tapping, warbling, the moon. You name it.

There is a lot to digest there. The old forums are awake, even if the title for the 8 minute trailer is ‘We can not wake up’. Many theories focus around death, while others are still unsure and waiting on more info. Either way, there’s a lot to unpack in these two trailers imagery.

Yume Nikki has been well loved since 2004 and widely regarded as one of the best RPG game maker games out there. Can Yume Nikki -Dream Diary- ever live up to those expectations? Is it a sequel? Prequel?  Will it focus on Madotsuki again, or someone else?
