Fans of RPG dungeon crawlers rejoice! Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk will finally be making its way to western audiences in Fall 2018 (or Spring for us Aussies). Announced by NIS America at their recent press conference, you can watch the trailer below.
In Labyrinth of Refrain, you take on the role of the living book Tractatus de Monstrum. Under what appears to be the ‘guidance’ of the evil witch Dronya, you are tasked to explore the seemingly endless maze-like dungeon beneath the city.
As you make your way through the Labyrinth, you come across various lurkers who, let’s be honest, probably aren’t looking to make new friends. You command a group of puppet soldiers, each with one of six unique class abilities. Add in a turn-based fighting system, along with formation and weapon upgrades, and they become your only chance of surviving the increasingly difficult hordes.
The rest of the storyline seems to be relatively thin, but going by previous release reviews from Japan, this probably shouldn’t be your main focus. It’s likely that if you’re a fan of dungeon crawlers with a JRPG turn-based flavour, then the gameplay is what will win you over.
Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk will be available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PC (via Steam) in late 2018.
