In a blog post today, Re-Logic has revealed that their highly anticipated game, Terraria: Otherworld, has been cancelled.
Announced over 3 years ago, Terraria: Otherworld was an expansion on the Terraria universe. It was to be a unique take on the Terraria formula that utilised more role-playing and strategy elements on top of the typical survival sandbox elements we know and love from Terraria. The game was being developed as a combined effort between Re-Logic (Terraria devs) and Pipeworks Studio (who ported Terraria to PS4, Xbox One, and Mobile).
Otherworld clearly went through a lot of troubles during its development cycle. Back in 2017, Re-Logic announced that the game wasn’t meeting their original vision and was therefore receiving a massive overhaul to get things back on track. With very little revealed or discussed about the game since then, it isn’t a huge shock to hear that development was still an issue.
“Our team has a clear vision for this game – one that we shared with all of you with much shared excitement – and, in spite of all of our efforts, the current state of the game remains equal parts far from that vision and beyond behind schedule from our initial planning.”
“Taking the massive amount of work that would be remaining to complete along with the extensive time it would take to get that done, and how that would greatly interfere with the pursuit of other projects on behalf of Re-Logic – it becomes clear that this leaves things in a very undesirable state. As a result, we have made the decision to terminate development of Terraria: Otherworld. “
Fans of Terraria will surely be dissapointed. Although it is the line about other projects that may leave a slither of hope. We know that Terraria is still being updated occasionally and the rumours surrounding a possible Terraria 2 are certainly in full force. What do you make of the game’s cancellation?
