Calling all dungeon crawlers! It’s time to return once more to The Stygian Abyss, a breathtaking fantasy realm brimming with danger and intrigue. 505 Games and Otherside Entertainment are proud to share their first trailer for Underworld Ascendant, the latest gaming project from game developers Warren Spector (Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Deus Ex), and Paul Neurath (Ultima Underworld, Thief).
Coming later in 2018, to PC, Underworld Ascendant also boasts a “best-in-class” development team that includes writer, and game director Joe Fielder (BioShock Infinite, Boom Box), and lead game designer Tim Stellmach (System Shock, Theif). The trailer showcases several darkened locales, a few sword-swinging murderous skeletons, and an enchantment or two, to help you along on your exploration
The trailer starts off with a cryptic warning “The Stygian Abyss, where life should not exist. Without your help it wont much longer”; which begs the question – What is the players role in the game and what has brought you to this treacherous Underworld? All seen through a first-person perspective, the trailer presents various areas of The Stygian Abyss, in which to explore. The trailer also impresses upon the viewer that how you progress, will depend on how you play. Between wielding a sword, aiming a bow, or casting magic with your staff, players will have to work out how best to use these weapons and abilities.
On top of the trailer’s release comes a new development diary that offers fans and players of the Underworld games an insight into the Improvisation Engine behind Underworld Ascendant. Without going into too much detail, the diary entry discusses the various ways in which the new gaming engine allows players to tackle challenges and quests. Simply put, there is more than one way to progress in the game and it’s up to the player to determine what works best for them and their style of play.
After having seen both the trailer and development diary, Underworld Ascendant looks to be a rather enjoyable dungeon crawling RPG. Not only will a players approach change how the game is experienced, but depending on your play style, you may find that The Stygian Abyss will be an even more unforgiving environment, full of nasties just waiting for their pound of flesh (yours).
Underworld Ascendant is set for release this 2018 on PC, with more information found on their official webpage.
