Rumours of a sequel to Id Software’s 2011 post-apocalyptic shooter Rage have been floating around for quite some time, with a Walmart leak last week adding fuel to the fire. However, they have now been confirmed, with Bethesda announcing Rage 2 for PS4, Xbox One and PC with a hype trailer, with gameplay videos to follow.
A sequel to Rage may comes as a surprise to some, however the success of 2016’s DOOM likely rekindled interest in Id Software’s library. However, unlike the first game, Rage 2 will be developed by Avalanche Studios, rather than Id. Avalanche Studios are best known for developing the Just Cause games, as well as 2015’s Mad Max, making them a solid choice for developing a post-apocalyptic action game with lots of shooting and driving.
The teaser itself doesn’t tell us a whole lot about the game, aside from it being about a bunch of strangely-dressed post apocalyptic warriors fighting each other. It is also unknown how it will link into the first game, and whether it will be a direct sequel or not.
If rumours of a Borderlands 3 announcement by Gearbox at E3 turn out to be true, then the “post-apocalyptic driver/shooter genre” could get a bit crowded in the near future. We’ll have more information on Rage 2 soon.
