Sony has just revealed that the latest God of War has sold a whopping 3.1 million units in just 3 days, making it the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive to date. The figure is for the first weekend of its release (Friday 20 April – Sunday 22 April) and includes both digital and physical sales.
To give you an idea of just how ridiculous that figure is, compare it to other popular PS4 exclusives – Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End sold 2.7 million units in its first week, while Horizon: Zero Dawn sold 2.6 million units in its first 2 weeks.
Developer Santa Monica Studios are understandably stoked about the news, with studio head Shannon Studstill thanking everyone for responding so positively to the latest instalment of the series and the new Daddy Kratos:
“I would like to personally thank the millions of fans around the world who decided to embark on Kratos’ latest adventure with us. Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play. I’d also like to thank our Creative Director, Cory Barlog, and Director of Product Development, Yumi Yang and our entire amazing team at Santa Monica Studio. The belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable. We look forward to hearing more about how fans are creating new memories of their favorite God of War gameplay moments that will be remembered for a long time.”
And while the figure is very impressive, it isn’t exactly surprising given God of War’s critical and public reception (we were one of the many who loved the game) – it currently sits at a very health 94 on Metacritic with critics and 9.2 with users, making it the highest scoring game of 2018 so far. Hopefully its critical and commercial success leads to even greater things in its inevitable sequel.
