One of the old titans in the MMORPG scene is finally closing down after 17 years. RuneScape Classic is the kind of game that many gamers would have dabbled in throughout the years. It helped shape the genre and solidify free MMOs as a viable option. Unfortunately though its time has come to an end with Jagex announcing that the game is shutting down.
For the sake of clarity, RuneScape Classic is the original game in the timeline. The current and modernised RuneScape as well as Oldschool RuneScape are still fully operational. As RuneScape went through continual development, the game had many iterations thanks to big leaps in technology and new engines to help run the game. Whilst the newer versions of RuneScape go on, there were many players who had the perspective of the original being the best.
” …it is with great sadness that we have taken the difficult decision to say goodbye to RuneScape Classic, which we will be winding down over the next 3 months. “
“With advancements in technology helping to further support both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, our tools are no longer compatible with Classic.”
“The number of bugs is getting worse, and we’re gradually seeing the game breaking. It’s important to highlight that these are bugs which we can’t fix due to the unsupported nature of the game. “
“As such, rather than have the game break indefinitely without any warning, we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to have their last goodbyes. “
“The RuneScape Classic servers will be taken offline at 8:00am BST on the 6th of August 2018. After such date, it will no longer be possible to log in to the Classic game.”
For those who want to give the game its last goodbye, you can still log into your account for the next few months with servers going down near the start of August. An end of an era for sure, but RuneScape still lives on with the more modern versions of the game still going strong. Runescape as a franchise is one of those MMORPGs that just never seems to lose its dedicated playerbase.
