Season 1 of Overwatch Contenders Australia has finished with a bang, with the Sydney Drop Bears obliterating Masterminds GC with a score of 4-0. The Drop Bears earned their spot in the finals by dealing Dark Sided their first defeat of the season in a gruelling 5-map match, which they won 3-2. Season 1 spanned three months and showcased the incredible talent of teams across Australia and New Zealand.
Sydney Drop Bears player Sam “Quatz” Dennis was all smiles in a post-match interview, saying: “It feels pretty good to win for once. Pretty much every LAN we’ve been the underdogs. It feels really good to be top dog at the moment.”
Overwatch Contenders is a program that operates in several regions around the globe, in which Overwatch players compete in teams for prize money, renown, and the opportunity to be noticed by Overwatch League teams. It’s Blizzard’s official path-to-pro for aspiring eSports players, and if you live in Australia it’s pretty much your easiest route there.
According to Sam, the team will be staying together to defend their title in Season 2, which will commence on July 1st.
