One of the most popular aspects of the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series is the romance system. The progressive and diverse nature of these options has been celebrated by gamers of all creeds, and have been recognised as one of the defining features of Bioware’s titles. Unfortunately, it seems Anthem will be void of these options.
Lead producer Mike Gambles explains to Game Informer the choice for no romantic options:
“There are no romances. There are friendships. Some of the stuff we did with Mass Effect – the Citadel DLC specifically – there was a lot of friendship moments. You and Garrus sitting up, shooting – that kind of stuff, we want to lean into that. The romantic stuff, we’re moving away from that for Anthem.”
This news comes as a disappointment to those of us who spent a lot of time wooing our companions in Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Hopefully, this friendship system in Anthem lives up and gives us plenty of choices.
EA’s E3 confernece gave us a closer look at the game in a chunky gameplay demo, as well as a release date. Anthem is set to release on February 22, 2019.
