The crowd went wild during Sony’s E3 press conference today when some familiar faces showed up on screen, and Resident Evil 2 was revealed in fully remade form.
Unlike previous re-releases, remasters and remakes that simply added a HD shine to the Resident Evil games that featured on the original PlayStation, this one looks to be a full remake in the sense that it is using the over-the-shoulder camera angle style that was popularised in Resident Evil 4 and used in plenty of other action games since then.
This will likely divide fans who would prefer to see the fixed camera style of the original to be left alone, but it certainly provides a new perspective and will make Resident Evil 2 feel brand new again. All we got was a trailer, but rumours point to expanded lore, more cut-scenes and storyline along with with some new enemies (and of course a lot of the old ones you’d remember from 1998).
Not only does this bode well for future remakes of the zombie killing franchise if successful, but along with the brilliant Resident Evil 7 last year, could bring it back to the critical acclaim and commercial success that spawned movies and recognition by everybody in the pop culture landscape.
The game was announced that it was being worked on back in 2015, so it’s great to see it today.
Resident Evil 2 will launch for PS4, Xbox One and PC on January 25th, 2019.
