This year’s Melbourne International Games Week runs from October 20 – 28, and its organisers have just released the program for the week-long games festival.
There’s something for everyone in the Melbourne International Games Week line up. The main star will no doubt be the huge expo that is PAX Aus (Oct 26 – 28), but there are also a number of industry events being held across the week, such as Game Connect Asia Pacific (bringing over 1000 games industry representatives to Melbourne), and the Australian Game Developer Awards.
Other intriguing offerings include High Score, an event that focuses on how music and sound art are used within video games; and Parallels: the Freeplay Showcase, which highlights and discusses some of the most experimental indie games being made in Australia and internationally.
And of course, this year also sees the launch of the inaugural Melbourne Queer Games festival. This relaxed online event runs between Oct 22 – 23, and aims to “inform, entertain and challenge local LGBTI players by bringing the best of world queer culture to Melbourne.” The event will include a livestream, website, game bundle and awards programme.
With Melbourne hosting its first esport event this weekend, and the diverse number of events on at Melbourne International Games Week, it really does look like Melbourne has firmly established itself as the games capital of Australia.
