Gamescom 2018 has been rolling out all sorts of news this week. One of the biggest is the face that Shenmue 3, the long awaited and highly anticipated sequel to Shenmue 1 & 2, has a release date. Check out the release date trailer below.
As you can see in the clip, Shenmue 3 is set to release August 27th, 2019. That’s a fairly long wait, considering the game was originally supposed to launch in late 2017.
Indeed, Shenmue 3 has been plagued with delay after delay, and even rumours of cancellation. On these delays, Deep Silver had the following statement,
“The extra time will be used to polish the quality of the game even further, to the high standards it deserves and release the product in the best possible timeframe.”
The game was a kickstarter success story, raising nearly $7 million and breaking records for the most money raised on a crowd-funding platform.
The series began back in 1999 with Shenmue 1 releasing on the Dreamcast. This was followed by Shenmue 2 in 2001, again for Dreamcast and also ported to the original Xbox. The series has had a number of false-starts in the interim, with Shenmue Online and Shenmue City, so fans of the classic series are clamoring for the new sequel after 17 years of waiting.
If you need your Shenmue fix before August 2019, the Shenmue 1 & 2 collection is out now!
