Andrew Cosby, a screen writer and founder of the comic book publishing company Boom! Studios, was recently seen Tweeting (and then hastily deleting) the fact that he was in talks with Netflix to create a Diablo animated series.
The full tweet read:
“I guess I can confirm I am indeed in final talks to write and show-run the new Diablo animated series for Activision and Netflix. It’s very exciting and I hope to the High Heavens it all works out.”
This has been in the rumour mill for the past month or so, but a Tweet right from the horse’s mouth makes it that much more of a sure thing. Based on Cosby’s wording, it’s not exactly a sure thing, but… c’mon, it’s a sure thing. Firstly, Netflix already has a precedence for adapting video games into animated series’ (Castlevania), so it’s not like they’re risk-averse here. A few months ago, Blizzard also openly stated that they were working on “multiple Diablo projects” and that “they have some things to show [us] later this year”. One of those projects was the Switch port – another has to be this deal with Netflix. Finally, Blizzard’s annual massive convention, BlizzCon, happens in late October. A month before that would be the perfect time to start building the hype for this project and then provide everyone with all the gory details at BlizzCon.
And damn, colour me cautiously pumped about this. I love the Diablo series, and from what I saw of Castlevania (caveat: I’m not familiar with the games), I have no doubt this will be done to a pretty high calibre and also not hold back on the delicious gore that’s part of the franchise. And after looking up Andrew Cosby’s previous work, he definitely seems like he’d be up to the task.
On the other hand, the Diablo games aren’t exactly known for their intricate and compelling story lines. I don’t think they’re awful necessarily, but they sure are pretty basic and uninspired. But the surrounding lore is great and brimming with potential – a skilled writer could definitely turn the world of Sanctuary into something pretty freakin’ awesome.
What excitement. I cannot wait for this one to become reality. Here’s hoping more details are given at, or before, BlizzCon.
