Capcom Vancouver, the studio behind the Dead Rising series and Capcom’s biggest western development studio, has closed down.
This is certainly a sad turn of events with over 100 talented staff losing their jobs. It isn’t completely out of the blue however, with mass layoffs hitting the studio earlier in the year. A Capcom representative confirmed to Kotaku that any projects in development would be cancelled.
“As a result of reviewing titles in development at Capcom Vancouver, Capcom has decided to cancel the development projects at this studio and will concentrate development of major titles in Japan.”
Capcom Vancouver was primarily known for the Dead Rising series, a franchise of third-person action games featuring hordes of zombies and creative killing techniques using various objects. The most recent game came out in late 2016. The games always did fairly well for themselves but clearly not well enough to keep the Dead Rising dream alive.
The IP will still be held by Capcom, so this doesn’t necessarily mean the death of Dead Rising.
