Announced at the end of January 2018, Mario Kart Tour is to be Nintendo’s fifth mobile games. But as the end of the fiscal year approaches, there’s been very little news about the title.
One of the few pieces available relates to game’s payment model. Mario Kart Tour will be “Free to Start” according to DeNA CEO Isao Moriyasu. DeNA will handle server maintenance, online infrastructure, and back-end issues for the game, while Nintendo handles development. This could see the game adopt a similar model to Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, both of which had micro-transactions.
In October 2018, Nintendo did confirm in its Q2 2019 briefing that the game was still “on track for release”. They also referred the upcoming game as a “service” which could further confirm a micro-transaction model.
As March approaches, we can expect to see an announcement real soon.
