It’s happening, Gearbox have teased on their twitter today news which looks to finally be a surefire Borderlands 3 announcement. The highly anticipated game seems definitely due as the last title in the franchise, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel released quite a ways back in 2014. This would be Gearbox’s first big title since 2016’s Battleborn.

A lot of the promotional image is clear and recognisable to long time Borderlands fans, with the cell shading style artwork and the desert scenery complete on a highway setting. It’s imagery we’ve seen in Borderlands prior and as such means that its very unlikely this teaser will be anything but exciting news for Borderlands fans. Speculation of the news has been mixed, while Borderlands 3 seems to be the most likely outcome (see the phrase “exit 3” at the top of the billboard on the teased image), theories of a remaster of the first title in the series began circling back in June of last year, which also raised some eyes.
A lot of this buzz and excitement of a remaster of Borderlands was due to the curious decision to exclude the game from the remastered pack titled Borderlands: The Handsome Title, which instead opted to package together both Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, stories that followed the game’s popular villain Handsome Jack. Remastering the first Borderlands could mean PlayStation 4 and Xbox One users getting to experience the game that started it all for the first time and this seems like a smart choice for Gearbox but Borderlands 3 is definitely an installment that is more in demand.
Fans will still have just over two weeks to speculate what the tease means, with more information provided on the 28th of March at PAX East but hopefully this means it won’t be long before players will get to jump back into their vault-hunting ways.
