Arkane Studios, developer of the Dishonored series, 2017’s Prey, and co-developer of the upcoming Wolfenstein: Youngblood, announced a brand new IP at Bethesda’s E3 press conference: Deathloop.
While no gameplay was shown, the trailer makes a great first impression. It’ll be a first-person action game with two rival protagonists named Colt and Julianna. The trailer has the two heroes trapped in some kind of loop where they can never die. Colt says he wants to break the cycle, while Julianna wants to protect it. Looks like the game will have lots of guns, explosions, and supernatural powers. Plus, dudes in masks to be on the receiving end of all of it.
With both Dishonored and Prey, Arkane has a record of setting games in unique and beautiful locales, and it looks like Deathloop might follow that trend. As described by the game director and art director, the game takes place on the island of Blackreef, which features sci-fi looking ruins and what appears to be an abandoned city. It also takes place in “a time of madness”, so the world is still bright and colourful enough to not be drab. According to the presentation, every level can be approached in several different ways.
There is currently no release date, but the trailer is giving me Dishonored vibes, some 60’s James Bond but also Russian Doll. Hopefully that sense of style stays through to the final game. But in any case, a AAA game starring two black protagonists is definitely something that should be celebrated. Also, what a great song.
