‘Free Guy’ is a 2020 movie starring Ryan Reynolds as a video game NPC

Posted on October 7, 2019

It’s that time of year. One of the curious reveals at New York Comic Con (NYCC) this year was a look at a movie by the name of ‘Free Guy’. What’s the premise? Oh, just Ryan Reynolds playing a bank-teller that learns he’s a non-player character (NPC) in an open world video game. Yes, we’re not kidding.

Joining Reynolds on stage to preview the project was Jodie Comer (of Killing Eve fame), Stranger Things’ Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and director Shawn Levy. There was a trailer that was screened exclusively to the audience of the panel, but there’s also a Meet the Cast featurette, also featuring Taika Waititi. A highlight of the video is the punchline of Ryan and Taika pretending they haven’t worked together before, ignoring the existence of Green Lantern.  You can watch that video here, courtesy of IGN.

The most audiences outside of NYCC will see for now is the Meet The Cast featurette and a released poster, featured above. Those keen for more information can look at showcase host IGN’s rundown. From what it sounds like, it’ll be a fun project with video game easter eggs aplenty.

Free Guy, Ryan Reynold’s next foray into video game related movies since this year’s Detective Pikachu, is out July 3rd 2020.
