Shin Megami Tensei is getting some love after several years of silence from ATLUS. In a Nintendo Direct Mini that showcased a few smaller announcements for the Switch, fans of the JRPG series were treated to not one but two trailers for upcoming Shin Megami Tensei titles. The most exciting of the two is the reveal of the next mainline game of the series: Shin Megami Tensei V. The game will be released simultaneously worldwide, which is a good reassurance to fans that they’ll have it in their fans at the same time as Japanese players.
We knew a Shin Megami Tensei game would be coming to the Switch eventually, when back in 2017 it was announced that a yet unnamed title was in the works. But this is the first look we’ve been given, and it looks pretty awesome. But the party’s not over for SMT fans. After 17 years, the fan favourite Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne is returning in full HD to Switch as well. They’re calling it a remaster, so we’ll have to wait to see if they have updated any gameplay or designs as well as the upgraded graphics seen in the trailer. Whatever the case, it’s a fantastic addition to the Switch’s library.
The Megami Tensei series is closely related to the Persona series. In fact, Persona was created as sub-series to Megami Tensei, which has since grown a life of its own and spawned critically acclaimed sequels and spin-offs. Since then, the two series have remained similar in both gameplay and themes. With Atlus working so hard on those games, it’s understandable that they’ve been a little quiet about other games. But now it’s Megami Tensei’s time in the spotlight, and with 2 games coming to the Switch in the same year, it’s likely to create a whole new group of fans.
Both Shin Megami Tensei V and III Nocturne HD will be hitting Western stores in 2021. Nocturne is advertised with a Spring release (Autumn in Australia), while V hasn’t yet revealed a firmer release window.
