Checkpoint Gaming is on the lookout for new contributors

Posted on September 23, 2021

Checkpoint Gaming is currently on the lookout for new contributors to bring into our diverse and passionate family. Whilst we can’t offer paid work, Checkpoint Gaming is opening up opportunities for new writers, reviewers, designers, audio engineers, community managers and more to join our team and showcase their talents to a large and growing audience.

Checkpoint Gaming started 7 years ago as a Melbourne-based video game community radio broadcast built on the foundation of giving a voice to the typically underrepresented within video games. Today, Checkpoint Gaming broadcasts nationally thanks to our affiliation with both JOY FM in Melbourne and The Community Radio Network across Australia. We reach over 2 million unique monthly listeners where we can continue to push for positive representation and inclusion within gaming and the games industry. Additionally, Checkpoint Gaming now runs our own website where we post news, features and reviews daily. Thanks to our affiliation with both Metacritic and OpenCritic, our reviews are amongst the most influential in Australia and are consumed by a global audience. Checkpoint Gaming also hosts non-broadcasted podcasts and interviews with special guests within the gaming space. Whilst our focus is currently on written and audio content, we’re constantly looking for ways to expand and reach new audiences.

Checkpoint Gaming is run by a group of LGBTQIA+ individuals. We’re a safe space for those within the rainbow community and as such we implore diverse Australians, especially those who don’t identify as cis white males, to get in touch and allow us to amplify your voice. We’re currently looking to hire primarily writers for our website to cover news and review new release games. Although with that said, there will also be opportunities to help out in other areas including social media management, design, audio editing and general administrative work. For those of you based in Melbourne, we can also offer the opportunity to join us for a live radio broadcast and train you in radio production.

Every piece published for Checkpoint Gaming will be read and edited by one of our editors, which means we are constantly offering feedback and helping you grow with your writing and reviewing skills. You don’t need any professional experience to apply, so please don’t hesitate to let us know if you’re interested.

Checkpoint Gaming is a volunteer-based organisation. Nobody within the group, including those who run it, make any money whatsoever. It’s done for the passion. Theoretically this may change in the future if sponsors and advertisers wanted to get involved, but we’d always communicate that very forthrightly.

For those who wish to apply to become a new Checkpoint Gaming volunteer, please send an email to [email protected] letting us know a bit about yourself, what games you like to play, where you’re based, where (and if) you fit into the LGBTQIA+ community, what your history with gaming media is (if you have any), why you’d like to apply to become a new team member, and a one-page sample of your writing (preferably video game-related)!

We can’t wait to hear from you.
