Animal Crossing: New Horizons is Japan’s best selling game of all time

Posted on February 5, 2022

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now Japan’s highest-selling video game ever, with over 10 million copies sold in Japan alone. This means it’s beaten out the original Super Mario Bros (6.8 million) and Pokemon Gold/Silver (7.6 million). If you combine the sales of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green together, they still just beat out New Horizons, but since Blue was released separately outside of Japan, Nintendo isn’t counting its sales towards the total. This is an incredible feat for New Horizons, as it was only released in 2020. Last year, its sales figures were at just around the 6 million mark.

This news comes from Nintendo’s financial report, where it reveals the newest sales statistics for each of its games. In terms of worldwide sales, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch has still got New Horizons beat. Deluxe has sold a total of 43.3M, with New Horizons coming in second with 32.6M. Judging by how fast Animal Crossing: New Horizons seems to be selling, I would be surprised if it overtakes Mario Kart 8 at some point over the next year or two.
