With a brief break for the holiday season, Magic: The Gathering has released its first set of 2022, Kamigawa Neon Dynasty. It brings with it a whole host of amazing new cards, mechanics and art. Set 1200 years after the first set of Kamigawa, many things have changed and new challenges now plague the plane. With the Emperor missing and a interplanar threat on the horizon, how will Kaito save the day?
It’s no secret that Wizards leaned heavily into the Japanese influence of Kamigawa, pulling out all the stops when it comes to card design and artwork. From the gorgeous full art Ukiyo-E land sets to anime styled alt art, it is hard not to fall in love with Kamigawa Neon Dynasty.
Art isn’t all though, the new mechanics in the set make for some super fun limited play. Sealed and Draft are really balanced and fun to run through, and there were definitely some cards that are shaking up Standard and Historic play. Vehicles return more balanced than before, and we see a new equipment based mechanic, reconfigure. Equipment is now an artifact creature and can be reconfigured similar to a mutate, however, you can also reconfigure it off a creature and it can battle alone. It’s quite ingenious really!
Let us not forget about Ninjutsu! It is back baby and the limited format is really supportive of this. With a mix of enter the battlefield triggers and direct damage effects it’s hard not to use ninjutsu multiple times per combat. We all need to thank whoever designed Kappa Tech-Wrecker and Silver Fur Master for the nod towards a classic. If you look close enough you will find many references hidden away. Theme, Draft and Set Boosters, bundles and boxes are all available now for you to rip into and enjoy so head into you local game store for Friday Night Magic events.
Commander decks are also out in 2 Kamigawa themes. Between Blue White Vehicles “Buckle Up” and Red Green Modify “Upgrades Unleashed”, there is something new to bring to the kitchen table on Commander night. These decks are stacked and ready to go out of the box. Wizards has been really making sure that preconstructed decks can play out of the box but easy enough for beginners to get a grasp on the concepts. Wizards has shared a full decklist for you if you want to see more.
If you want to get playing today it’s on MTG Arena. Use code PLAYNEO for 6 booster packs. The Mastery Set Pass this set has holographic Koi fish alongside a host of Kamigawa themed sleeves to collect. The Ukiyo-E lands are also available in the shop so you can enjoy those gorgeous things in every deck you play.
If you want more of the amazing art and design of Kamigawa Neon Dynasty, then check out the limited Virtual Art Exhibition. The VR experience will feature 134 pieces of art from the set created by 83 artists who drew the world of Kamigawa. It’s only available for a short period of time and will end on the 24th of February. There are even giveaways for posters up for grabs! Head over now.
