In confusing and absurd video game turned movie news, Variety has reported that Hazelight Studios’ Game of the Year, It Takes Two, is becoming a movie. Amazon is set to do priority development with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s production company Seven Bucks Productions. Deadline announced in January that DJ2 Entertainment would help to produce It Takes Two. The company has worked on Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2, and has a few more game adaptions under its belt. It Takes Two is already on their project list, coincidentally, the provided link is for We Happy Few. As DJ2 announced with Gold Circle Films in 2017 that they’d be working on a We Happy Few movie. Despite this, there hasn’t been any news about it since then.
It Takes Two’s movie will follow the same plot progression as the game. From Variety, “the film adaptation will follow May and Cody who, as they go through a divorce, find their minds transported into two dolls that their daughter, Rose, made to represent them. Now they must go on a wild and fantastical journey to find a way to get back into their bodies”.
Sonic the Hedgehog’s writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller will be writing and be executive producers for It Takes Two. Moreover, Hazelight’s founder Josef Fares and Studio Manager Oskar Wolontis are set to executive produce. In January of this year, The Rock was interviewed in Men’s Journal talking about Black Adam, and his exercise regime. Asked if he’d be bringing any more video game characters to the silver screen, The Rock said that he’s bringing “one of the biggest, most badass games” to the big screen. The Rock has been playing this game “for years”, adding that the announcement will come out later this year.

We don’t know if It Takes Two is the game The Rock was talking about, with the actor starring in previous video game adaptions like Doom (2005) and Rampage (2018). Funnily enough, when the interview came out, a lot of gaming news sites guessed what kind of game it’d be. A lot of Call of Duty, Fortnight, even a stab at Doom again. But who knew, the ‘badass’ game may have been It Takes Two. On the other hand, The Rock mentioned he’s been playing the unspecified game for “years”. In contrast to that comment, It Takes Two came out in March of last year. Whether or not it was a mistake, we won’t know until the end of the year.
While this is a very strange addition to the repertoire of video game adaptions, it’s not the weirdest. Who do you think The Rock might play? Did you play It Takes Two? Let us know! And don’t forget to check out our review for It Takes Two here.
