Melbourne made Riftbound brings spellweaving and necromancy to PC in May

Melbourne-based Barrel Smash Studios have announced that their fantasy “lane defence game”, Riftbound, will be launching onto the PC via Steam on May 12th. Riftbound has been on our radar ever since we published our Megalist of upcoming Australian indie games of 2022. With similarities to the Plants vs Zombies franchise, the game will see you take on waves of foes as you strategically align your defences in lanes.

You play as a spellcaster, capable of summoning your army of elemental warriors to fight back against waves of foes conjured by an evil necromancer. Additional spells and combinations add to the strategy, as you burn down deadly adversaries and tough boss fights.

Taking perhaps a splash of inspiration from the Pokémon series, your summoned allies each have elemental affinities that will help distinguish them and expand the game’s strategic depth. These allies can also be evolved to become more powerful. Riftbound is said to offer 50 levels of varying difficulty, side quests, and a wide range of accessibility options to allow more players to engage in the gameplay.

“We’ve developed an epic adventure full of magic and intrigue, with fable-like creatures in a high-fantasy setting,” said James Thomas, Co-Founder and Lead Programmer, Barrel Smash Studios. “We hope players will have as much fun immersing themselves in the Riftbound world as we did while creating it!”
