A few months following the release of Forspoken, Square Enix has revealed In Tanta We Trust, the game’s first premium expansion. The trailer shows some of the combat and parkour, but is (perhaps wisely) light on dialogue. A release date has also been confirmed, and we don’t have long to wait until release.
The expansion takes place at the end of the main storyline of Forspoken. In the DLC, protagonist Frey is sent back in time into the chaotic past of the land of Athia while trying to rid it of The Break, its mysterious corruption. Accompanied by fellow sorceress Tanta Cinta, Frey must discover why the land is at war, and against whom, while learning more about her own fate.
In terms of gameplay, the DLC promises “a new set of magic“, as well as new gameplay features based around teaming up with your NPC companion Tanta Cinta. Considering the largely negative critical response to the base game’s attempts at hip and modern dialogue, the trailer wisely focuses on the gameplay; hopefully the quality of the writing in the expansion will have improved, but we will have to wait and see.
It will be an uphill struggle to win back the crowd. Square Enix has acknowledged that the sales of Forspoken have been “lacklustre“. Furthermore, Luminous Productions, the game’s development studio, has since been folded into Square Enix. For those still playing Forspoken, or are willing to give it a second chance, the In Tanta We Trust expansion will release on May 26th 2023.
